Gallery "Nokogiri" will host a solo exhibition titled "Why am I here?" by French ceramicist/painter Marina Le Gall. This exhibition marks her second solo show in Japan and her first focused on painting works.
Her paintings capture landscapes with an instantaneous and cold perspective, akin to photographs taken by reconnaissance drones or animal-shaped androids. They reject human judgment, relying instead on accumulated data from past experiences to refuse any form of judgment. Whether in death or in life, there is no profound sadness or particular joy. Humans step back, observing the natural flow while sensing the presence of a greater force and a faint smell of blood. She argues that depicting nature and animals is not about following a coherent narrative but accepting contradictions. Stories and contradictions concern only humans. Her paintings exist where these are discarded, and the empty husks of humanity become sculptures drenched in paint like splattered blood. As we become increasingly isolated from nature and life, we wonder why we are here.

・About Artist
Marina Le GallBorn in 1986 on a farm in Campelré in the Brittany region of France, Marina Le Gall spent her childhood surrounded by animals. Accompanying her father on hunts and documenting the dying animals has influenced her current artistic expression. After graduating from high school, she studied ceramics at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. She then pursued further studies at the Sydney College of the Arts before obtaining the DNSAP (le diplôme national supérieur d'arts plastiques), a national vocational qualification in the field of arts in France. Since then, she has held exhibitions in various locations worldwide, including Paris, London, and Brussels. Her project "Hannibal," a monumental work reaching a height of 3 meters created in a forest outside Paris in 2016, garnered attention both nationally and internationally.
