NOKOGIRI is pleased to present “Who is Marianne?”, the long-awaited first solo exhibition in Japan with Swedish ceramic artist Marianne Hallberg.
Marianne, now 70 years old, is a Swedish ceramic artist. “When I was younger, I thought I knew everything,” she says. “I wouldn't be living today if I still lived like that.”. She says that when she encountered the formidable work of ceramics, where each process takes time, something in her found great humility, and she soon became life-affirming. This, she says, is the reason why she has been able to live her life happily, to this day. Ceramics, first and foremost, is a lifesaver for her, not a job. Through ceramics, she has discovered that she can and should see the world as she sees it and feels it, with as little interpretation from others as possible. She believes anything that has a connection to everyday life is right, and that rightness is connected to humor. And it is in her solo exhibition, that this worldview is most evident, where she fills the entire room with humor. "I feel sympathy for Scientists," she says. For her, the solo exhibition is the current research report on the eternal mystery of, "Who am I?".

・About Marianne Hallberg
Marianne Hallberg
Born in 1952, in the Swedish Port City of Gothenburg, her upbringing as an artist was unique. Being the daughter of a florist, and accumulating different influences from all over the world, she chose to devote her life to ceramics. Her one-of-a-kind style has attracted the attention of progressive creators and her name is often mentioned by the young generation as their major influence. Her personal ideology is to “Be Kind”.
Statement
I am a ceramicist, but in a way, I am a 3D painter.
I have always loved ceramics from a young age, and my creation seems to evolve to keep pace with my life and the world around me.
My art mirrors life itself. My work acts as an outlet to mirror what I see in the world, outside, and inside of myself. I have come to realize that the things I can see are often interesting. You know, life is always full of humor.
I come from a small town on the west coast of Sweden. My family has been growing flowers for many generations, so I feel as though I grew up in a greenhouse. That is probably why I continue to make flowers and vases.
I am a romanticist but also a surrealist. I always observe my surroundings carefully and pursue anything that is unexpected.
Clay is the medium that will always be very close to my heart.
I believe that the delicate and fragile things will be the ones that will have the power to last forever.

・About the work
Marianne Hallberg’s creations are ordinary objects that are common in everyday life; objects that are within reach and accessible. Her works are the transformation of these “ordinary” objects. Her diverse works include three-dimensional works in which flat sketches seem to stand up with a will, trompe l'oeil flat works and plates of 'words' that ask us questions. Most of her works are painted with characteristic blue lines, known as Marianne blue, on a white background.
