Sarugakucho, Shibuya, Finnish Forest

Gallery "Nokogiri" (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will hold Finnish artist, Jenni Tuominen's first solo exhibition in Japan, "Sarugakucho, Shibuya-ku, Finnish Forest." The exhibition will be held at the gallery. Jenni has designed for Marimekko, one of Europe's leading apparel companies, and also works with various mediums, mainly in ceramics, but also in painting, illustration, and video.
All of Jenni's creations can be described as 'forest’s blessings' (sachi). The forest has always been close to her life, it is an amusement park, a dense divine territory with countless creatures, and a place of awe that changes when a storm comes. “In the
forest, you hear all the voices of nature, but at the same time, so quiet. It's as if I’m living in a soap bubble.”, she says. She has always loved the forest.

Her work is singular in that it is infantile and girlish in itself, however, she herself is still living in the midst of those qualities. She says: "I identify with children's ability to think and speak. That's what I'm looking for in my work." She seeks infantility, girlhood, and something that only the forest can have. Qualities that ordinary adults have lost. 'I fight for children’s rights to be who they are.' She protects it by becoming one with what must not be lost. And even now, her greatest pleasure is, "riding my bike everywhere and eating ice cream".

We dedicate the exhibition of Jenni Tuominen's work to all forests, and its’ blessing, the time to be children.

・About the work

“They look like forest fairies,” I commented, “I like fairy tales and I liked going to the woods, so I think they live in the forest.” She said. Apparently, she doesn’t intend to make people or animals that live in the forest, but they live in the forest of their own accord. “When I make things with clay, I don't think about what I will make beforehand. The shape will emerge as my hands play with the clay. The works that were created in this way are collected here. In the background, you can see a 'forest', a place where countless lives are born, die, and are recycled perpetually.
