NOKOGIRI (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) is pleased to announce The Shouting Zoo @ Daikanyama, the first solo exhibition in Japan by French artist Marina Le Gall. Prior to the solo exhibition, her work will be exhibited at Art Fair Tokyo (10-12 Mar 2023) at booth No 5016.
Marina was born into a farming family in Brittany, on the western edge of France, and spent her childhood surrounded by animals. She accompanied her father on his hunting trips and documented the dying animals, which led to her creative work using the wild as a medium to speak about the unspeakable.

・About the exhibition
We mutilate animals to eat them, but to make animal artwork, to see animal artwork, is to try to reconnect what has been mutilated. It is to reverse life and destiny. It is not hard to imagine that Marina, who accompanied her father on his hunts as a child and continued to draw dying animals, had an experience that she cannot verbalize. Animals that just a few moments ago were freely flying, running around and living life itself, were being shot dead in front of her eyes. Newborn children, parents still raising their children, they are all dying. And I have a big part in their deaths. But I die too. The bullet against me has already been fired the moment I was born. Just like the lives that are dying in front of me, I am already a dying life. First, they die. In order that I may live. And then I will die. Surely to live for someone else.
By covering up both life and death, human beings have created a peaceful society without fear or incomprehension. But living is accompanied by the smell of blood, and dying, part of the cycle of life, is synonymous with killing to complete the cycle. But death is not an illusion, it does not lie, and it comes with a certainty that contains humor. And between my death and someone else's, fleeting life is born.
Marina's animals bark a lot and cry a lot. They laugh often, talk often and sing often. They are like organs and like friends.
