・About the exhibition
Gallery Nokogiri (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will host Finnish artist Jenni Tuominen's solo exhibition "Sarugakucho, Shibuya, Forest without a King." Jenni is best known as a designer for Marimekko, one of Europe's leading apparel companies, but she is also an artist whose work transcends genres, including ceramics, textiles, painting, illustration and video. This exhibition is the second in Japan following "Sarugakucho, Shibuya-ku, Finland" held in 2022. More than 100 sculptures and 22 small paintings, mainly new works, will be on display.
Whether it is in Sarugakucho, Shibuya, or in Finland, we can always find a forest if we want to. No matter how big a city you live in, you can always spy a forest just around the corner. The forest is your heart. A forest is where all life breathes, there is order and civility, everything complements each other. But diseases co-exist, war and murder do not occur. No one owns anything, life is lent to us for a certain period of time, everything is born, disappears, is born again and the cycle repeats itself.
Deep in the forest, I want there to be a kingdom where animals, plants and people coexist. People must work hard and enjoy their work, and there must be a generous king there, listening to his people, nodding and smiling. When we were talking about this, Jenni said, I would prefer a kingdom without a king. I said Yes, it would be nice not to have a king there. If each one of us is connected to the forest, we don't need anyone to rule. In the first place, we had to be connected to something much greater than a king. The theme of the exhibition was soon decided as 'Forest without a King'.
There is no order in the forest without a king. The flat surface extends forever, different dimensional games mix, and humans and animals smile at each other. The inhabitants have no special reason to be in a good mood today in the Forest without a King.
